1. Tímto jménem Izraelští všeobecně označovali zemi, obývanou *Aramejci a rozprostírající se sv od Palestiny, která proti moři Genezaretskému vystupuje náhle do výše 600 m a táhne se až k pramenům Eufratu [Gn 33,18 ]. Je to země totožná celkem se Sýrií. V Kralickém textu A. je překládáno obyčejně jako Sýrie, Syrští (Syrští od Damašku [2S 8,5 ; 1Kr 15,18 ] Sýrie Soba [2S 10,6 ]; Sýrie z domu Rohob [2S 10,6 ; 1Pa 7,14 ]. viz také hesla Gessuri a Máchati). Jákobovy ženy Lía a Ráchel byly Aramejky (sr. [Dt 26,5 ]). Aram se uvádí také jako *Aram Naharaim, nejde-li tu jen o jeden z několika okrsků nebo království aramejských [Gn 24,10 ]. Několik menších království této země opanoval král damašský [1Kr 20,1 ].

Aram
the son of Shem (Gen 10:22 ); according to (Gen 22:21 ), a grandson of Nahor. In (Matt 1:3; 1:4), and (Luke 3:33), this word is the Greek form of Ram, the father of Amminadab (1Chr 2:10).
The word means high, or highlands, and as the name of a country denotes that elevated region extending from the northeast of Palestine to the Euphrates. It corresponded generally with the Syria and Mesopotamia of the Greeks and Romans. In (Gen 25:20 ; 31:20; 31:24; Deut 26:5 ), the word "Syrian" is properly "Aramean" (R.V., marg.). Damascus became at length the capital of the several smaller kingdoms comprehended under the designation "Aram" or "Syria."
