*Galatie.
Galacie [1Pt 1,1 ; 1K 16,1 ; Ga 1,2 ]; v [2Tm 4,10 ] se myslí snad na Gallii = Francii].
1. Hornatá krajina s mnohými pastvinami a úrodnými poli ve středu Malé Asie, obydlená Kelty neboli Gally, kteří sem přitáhli z Makedonie k vybídnutí Nikomeda I., krále Bitynie, ve 3. stol. př. Kr. [278-7]. Byly to loupeživé kmeny Tektosagů, Tolistobogiů a Tokmerů. Usadili se v severovýchodní Frygii, kterou si podmanili. Hlavními městy byla Ancyra [Ankyra, dnešní hlavní město Turecka Ankara], Pessinus a Tavium.
2. Provincie římská, jejímž základem byla původně Galatie. Římané vycházeli přistěhovalým Gallům velice vstříc, oceňujíce jejich vojenskou zdatnost. Kolem r. 160 př. Kr. dostali část Lykaonie s městy Ikoniuum a Derbe, roku 64 př. Kr. jim svěřil Pompeius Menší Arménii, Marcus Antonius Paflagonii atd. Jejich jediným úkolem bylo udržovati pořádek na jihu Malé Asie a na Tauru. Když však za krále Amynta nastaly nepořádky, proměnil císař Augustus Paflagonii, Pontus, původní Galatii, Frygii, Lykaonii a Pisidii v římskou provincii Galatii r. 25 př. Kr. Této provincie se týká [1Pt 1,1 ].
3. Galatie epištoly ke Galatským je patrně ona původní země Gallů v severnější části středu Malé Asie. Podle [Sk 18,23 ] byly zde sbory, které Pavel založil asi na počátku své druhé misijní cesty [Sk 16,6 ]. Nikde sice nečteme o tom, že by Pavel zde sbory zakládal, ale dá se předpokládati, že podle [Ga 4,13 n] právě zde Pavel byl stižen nemocí [malarií?], což přijal za pokyn Boží, aby se pokusil o zvěstování evangelia. Rozhodně je Pavel sám zakladatelem galatských sborů [Ga 4,11 - Ga 4,13 ; Ga 4,19 ; Ga 1,11 ]. Někteří se ovšem domnívají, že jde v ep. Galatským o provincii Galatii, v níž ležely sbory Derbe, Lystra, Ikonium, Antiochie Pisidická, jež Pavel navštívil na své první misijní cestě [Sk 13,1 n; 14,1n]. *Galatským.

Galatia
has been called the "Gallia" of the East, Roman writers calling its inhabitants Galli. They were an intermixture of Gauls and Greeks, and hence were called Gallo-Graeci, and the country Gallo-Graecia. The Galatians were in their origin a part of that great Celtic migration which invaded Macedonia about B.C. 280. They were invited by the king of Bithynia to cross over into Asia Minor to assist him in his wars. There they ultimately settled, and being strengthened by fresh accessions of the same clan from Europe, they overran Bithynia, and supported themselves by plundering neighbouring countries. They were great warriors, and hired themselves out as mercenary soldiers, sometimes fighting on both sides in the great battles of the times. They were at length brought under the power of Rome in B.C. 189, and Galatia became a Roman province B.C. 25.
This province of Galatia, within the limits of which these Celtic tribes were confined, was the central region of Asia Minor.
During his second missionary journey Paul, accompanied by Silas and Timothy (Acts 16:6), visited the "region of Galatia," where he was detained by sickness (Gal 4:13 ), and had thus the longer opportunity of preaching to them the gospel. On his third journey he went over "all the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order" (Acts 18:23). Crescens was sent thither by Paul toward the close of his life (2Tim 4:10 ).
