1. Podle Sellina jde o velkou oasu, 75 km jižně od Bersabé, se třemi prameny 'Ain Kades, 'Ain el Kderat a 'Ain Kuséme. 'Ain el Kderat bývá některými odborníky ztotožňována s Meriba [Nu 27,14 ; Ez 47,19 ] »vody sváru«; [Ex 17,7 ; Dt 33,8 ], ostatní dvě s Massa a Mara. Podle biblických údajů leželo K. na poušti *Tsin [Nu 20,1 ; Nu 27,14 ] v hornaté krajině, 11 dní cesty od Sinaje přes horu Seir [Dt 1,2 ] při pomezí Edomitů [Nu 20,16 ] mezi vrchem Akrabim a potokem Egyptským [Joz 15,3 ; Ez 47,19 ]. Jména K. se užívalo k označení pramene [Ez 48,28 ], města [Nu 20,16 ] nebo pouště [Ž 29,8 ]. K rozlišení od jiných K. se mluví v SZ o Kádesbarne [Nu 34,4 ; Joz 15,3 ]. Kdysi se jmenovalo En Misfat (= pramen soudu [Gn 14,7 ]). Zde Chedorlaomer se spojenci potřel Amalechitské a Amorejské [Gn 14,1 n]. Abraham se zdržoval blízko K. a tam se také ukázal ženě Agar anděl [Gn 16,14 ; Gn 20,1 ]. Tu umřela a byla pochována sestra Mojžíšova Maria [Nu 20,1 ]. Odtud vysláni špehéři, aby shlédli zaslíbenou zemi; po jejich návratu následovala dlouhá bludná cesta po poušti [Dt 1,3 ; Dt 2,14 ]. Odtud posláni poslové ke králi edomskému [Nu 20,14 ; Sd 11,16 n]. Tu reptali Izraelci pro nedostatek vody a Mojžíš vyvedl vody ze skály [Nu 20,1 - Nu 20,12 ]. Proto nazýváno též »vody sváru« [Nu 27,14 ; Ez 47,19 ; Ez 48,28 ].
2. Město na území pokolení Izacharova, přidělené levitům z rodiny Gersonovy [1Pa 6,72 ], nazývané v [Joz 21,28 ] Kesion. Snad dnešní Abu Kedeis, 4 km j. od Magedda. *Kedes.

Kedesh
sanctuary.
(1.) A place in the extreme south of Judah (Josh 15:23). Probably the same as Kadesh-barnea (q.v.).
(2.) A city of Issachar (1Chr 6:72). Possibly Tell Abu Kadeis, near Lejjun.
(3.) A "fenced city" of Naphtali, one of the cities of refuge (Josh 19:37; Judg 4:6). It was assigned to the Gershonite Levites (Josh 21:32). It was originally a Canaanite royal city (Josh 12:22), and was the residence of Barak (Judg 4:6); and here he and Deborah assembled the tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali before the commencement of the conflict with Sisera in the plain of Esdraelon, "for Jehovah among the mighty" (Judg 4:9; 4:10). In the reign of Pekah it was taken by Tiglath-Pileser (2Kings 15:29). It was situated near the "plain" (rather "the oak") of Zaanaim, and has been identified with the modern Kedes, on the hills fully four miles north-west of Lake El Huleh.
It has been supposed by some that the Kedesh of the narrative, where Barak assembled his troops, was not the place in Upper Galilee so named, which was 30 miles distant from the plain of Esdraelon, but Kedish, on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, 12 miles from Tabor.
