Syn Jafetův [Gn 10,2 ; 1Pa 1,5 ], praotec nesemitského národa, jenž je v bibli jmenován s jinými severskými, po př. indoevropskými národy jako Tubalem, Javanem, Magogem, Tirasem a j. Nápisy z doby Tiglatfalasarovy a Salmanasarovy mluví o zemi Mušku [= Mešech] v horách na sever od Assyrie, hraničící se zemí Tabal [= Tubal] na západě. V době Ezechielově dodával M. otroky a měděné nádoby Tyrským [Ez 27,13 ]. Během času se stali M. a Tubal symbolickými jmény pro barbarské národy [Ž 120,5 ], sídlící podle Herodota v horách někde jv od Černého moře. Podle [Ez 38,2 - Ez 38,3 ; Ez 39,1 ] byl M. spojencem Tubalovým a poddaným mythického krále *Goga.

Meshech
drawing out, the sixth son of Japheth (Gen 10:2 ), the founder of a tribe (1Chr 1:5; Ezek 27:13 ; 38:2; 38:3). They were in all probability the Moschi, a people inhabiting the Moschian Mountains, between the Black and the Caspian Seas. In (Ps 120:5) the name occurs as simply a synonym for foreigners or barbarians.
"During the ascendency of the Babylonians and Persians in Western Asia, the Moschi were subdued; but it seems probable that a large number of them crossed the Caucasus range and spread over the northern steppes, mingling with the Scythians. There they became known as Muscovs, and gave that name to the Russian nation and its ancient capital by which they are still generally known throughout the East."
