1. Hora ve stejnojmenném pohoří [Joz 12,22 ; Joz 15,55 ], které se táhne v délce asi 20 km jihovýchodním směrem od ústí potoka Gíson [Kison] do Středozemního moře v zálivu haifském [Haifa] po jeho levém břehu. Tvořilo jižní hranici území pokolení Asserova [Joz 19,26 ]. Dosahuje výšky asi 550 m, chráníc přístav před větry. Vápencovým předhořím vybíhá do Středozemního moře. Dosud je hojně porostlý stromovím: duby, mandlovníky, hrušněmi. Za starověku vedla až ke K. stará obchodní cesta, jež se zde dělila na dvě; jedna vedla do Fénicie, druhá přes pohoří k Tiberiadskému jezeru. Zde také byl nalezen pračlověk karmélský, podobný lidem neandertálské rasy.
Ve výši asi 180 m stojí klášter karmelitánek. K. odedávna býval útočištěm pronásledovaných, kteří se skrývali v jeho jeskyních a zalesněných údolích. Ovládaje širé okolí svou polohou, byl také místem bohoslužby [1Kr 18,20 ]. Byly zde nalezeny okruhy, vytvořené z balvanů, jež nějak souvisely s kultem zemřelých. I nalezený pračlověk byl pochován. Nejspíše tu bývala svatyně Baalova, poněvadž kněží B. zvolili K. za místo zápasu s Eliášem; ovšem zde byli poraženi a zahubeni [1Kr 18,17 - 1Kr 18,40 ]. Odtud spatřil služebník Eliášův "oblak maličký, jako dlaň člověčí" vystupující od moře, z něhož se spustil veliký déšť [1Kr 18,41 - 1Kr 18,46 ].
Elizeus rovněž navštěvoval K. [2Kr 2,25 ; 2Kr 4,25 ]. Zdá se, že k bohoslužbám na K. náleželo také vzdělávání zahrad, jak ukazuje ještě i [Iz 33,9 ; Iz 35,2 ; Jr 50,19 ; Pís 7,5 ; Mi 7,14 ]. Amos prorokoval, že "vyschne vrch K." [Am 1,2 ], jak překládá Karafiát podle [Am 9,3 ], zatím co Kraličtí mluví o "poli nejvýbornějším", shodně s tradicí rabínskou. Na západním výběžku je hrob, prý Eliášův.
2. Město v hornaté části území Judova [Joz 15,55 ; 1S 15,12 ; 1S 25,2 ]. Jméno dosud zachováno v moderním Kurmul, asi 11 km jihovýchodně od Hebronu. Z tohoto města byl Nabal, jehož vdovu pojal David za manželku [1S 25,2 - 1S 25,40 ]. Odtud byl také jeden ze slavných bojovníků Davidových, jménem Chezrai [2S 23,35 ].

Carmel

(1.) A prominent headland of Central Palestine, consisting of several connected hills extending from the plain of Esdraelon to the sea, a distance of some 12 miles or more. At the east end, in its highest part, it is 1,728 feet high, and at the west end it forms a promontory to the bay of Acre about 600 feet above the sea. It lay within the tribe of Asher. It was here, at the east end of the ridge, at a place called el-Mukhrakah (i.e., the place of burning), that Elijah brought back the people to their allegiance to God, and slew the prophets of Baal (1Kings 18:1etc.). Here were consumed the "fifties" of the royal guard; and here also Elisha received the visit of the bereaved mother whose son was restored by him to life (2Kings 4:25). "No mountain in or around Palestine retains its ancient beauty so much as Carmel. Two or three villages and some scattered cottages are found on it; its groves are few but luxuriant; it is no place for crags and precipices or rocks of wild goats; but its surface is covered with a rich and constant verdure." "The whole mountain-side is dressed with blossom, and flowering shrubs, and fragrant herbs." The western extremity of the ridge is, however, more rocky and bleak than the eastern. The head of the bride in (Cant 7:5) is compared to Carmel. It is ranked with Bashan on account of its rich pastures (Isa 33:9; Jer 50:19 ; Amos 1:2 ). The whole ridge is deeply furrowed with rocky ravines filled with dense jungle. There are many caves in its sides, which at one time were inhabited by swarms of monks. These caves are referred to in (Amos 9:3 ). To them Elijah and Elisha often resorted (1Kings 18:19; 18:42; 2Kings 2:25). On its north-west summit there is an ancient establishment of Carmelite monks. Vineyards have recently been planted on the mount by the German colonists of Haifa. The modern Arabic name of the mount is Kurmul, but more commonly Jebel Mar Elyas, i.e., Mount St. Elias, from the Convent of Elias.
(2.) A town in the hill country of Judah (Josh 15:55), the residence of Nabal (1Sam 25:2 ; 25:5; 25:7; 25:40), and the native place of Abigail, who became David's wife (1Sam 27:3 ). Here king Uzziah had his vineyards (2Chr 26:10). The ruins of this town still remain under the name of Kurmul, about 10 miles south-south-east of Hebron, close to those of Maon.
