Issus (Cilicia)
Description
Issus or Issos (Phoenician Sissu; ancient Greek Ἰσσός or Ἰσσοί) is an ancient settlement on a strategic coastal plain located under the small river Pinarus (a few meters wide, a fast-flowing stream of melting waters) beneath a navigationally challenging inland mountain range rising to the east in the Turkish province of Hatay, near the border with Syria. It can be identified with Kinet Höyük in the village of Yeşilköy near Dörtyol in the Turkish province of Hatay. Excavations on the mound took place from 1992 to 2012 at Bilkent University. Most notably, no less than three decisive ancient or medieval battles took place here, each of which was called the Battle of Issus in its time:
- In the Battle of Issus (333 BC), Alexander the Great defeated the Persian king Darius III. This battle is sometimes referred to as the first Battle of Issus, but it is more commonly known simply as the Battle of Issus, due to the significance of Alexander's victory over the First Persian Empire and its impact on later history of the region, including all successor city-states.
- The Battle of Issus (194) or the second Battle of Issus - between the forces of Emperor Septimius Severus and his rival Pescennius Niger.
- The Battle of Issus (622) or the third Battle of Issus - between the Byzantine Empire and the Sassanian Persian Empire.
