The city was one of many that Josephus Flavius fortified after his appointment as commander of Galilee (the Golan was under Galilee). The siege and conquest of the city is described by Josephus in the Fourth Book of War. Three legions took part in the battle - Legio V Macedonica, X Fretensis and XV Apollinaris. Some of Legio X were soldiers recruited in Syria.
