Jotapata
Description
Jotapata (Ancient Greek Ἰωτάπατα Iōtápata, Arabic Ḫirbat Ğifāt or Šīfāt,[1] Modern Hebrew יוֹדְפַת Jodfat) is an archaeological site in Israel. It is located in the North District. Jotapata was a scene of the Jewish War. Flavius Josephus defended the fortress against the Roman army under Vespasian in the summer of 67 AD. But he could not prevent the capture of Jotapata, surrendered to Vespasian and later became the historian of the war.
About a kilometer south of the archaeological site is the modern city of Jotapat, founded in 1960 and named after the ancient site.
