sir'-tis (surtis): la Reviziita Versio (Brita kaj Amerika) formo por "kvarcaj sabloj" en Agoj 27:17 . Tiuj sablobenkoj, ĉe la norda marbordo de Afriko, estis de fruaj tempoj konsiderataj kiel fonto de danĝero por maristoj. Virgilio aludas al ili (Aen. iv.40). Dum la vojaĝo de Paŭlo, la ŝipo, pelata de ŝtorma vento, Euraquilo, estis en danĝero esti ĵetita sur ilin.

Quicksands
found only in (Acts 27:17), the rendering of the Greek Syrtis. On the north coast of Africa were two localities dangerous to sailors, called the Greater and Lesser Syrtis. The former of these is probably here meant. It lies between Tripoli and Barca, and near Cyrene. The Lesser Syrtis lay farther to the west.
