Forțele filistene au avansat spre Șunem din Afec și s-au pregătit să atace israeliții lângă tabăra lor din Izreel. Saul, temându-se de marea armată care îi stătea înainte, s-a strecurat în timpul nopții pentru a consulta o mediumă la En-Dor, în căutarea sfatului lui Samuel cel decedat. Când filistenii au atacat a doua zi dimineață, israeliții s-au retras pe pantele Muntelui Ghilboa. Saul și trei dintre fiii săi au fost uciși, iar filistenii au batjocorit Israelul atârnând trupurile lor pe zidul Bet-Șean. Mai târziu, bărbați din Iabeș-Galaad au călătorit pe timp de noapte și au recuperat trupurile.

boiling spring, a mountain range, now Jebel Fukua', memorable as the scene of Saul's disastrous defeat by the Philistines. Here also his three sons were slain, and he himself died by his own hand (1Sam 28:4 ; 31:1-8; 2Sam 1:6 -21; 21:12; 1Chr 10:1; 10:8). It was a low barren range of mountains bounding the valley of Esdraelon (Jezreel) on the east, between it and the Jordan valley. When the tidings of this defeat were conveyed to David, he gave utterance to those pathetic words in the "Song of the Bow" (2Sam 1:19 -27).
